Long list in competition (click on title for more) - nominations: 19

London Film Award Nomination Carl Tibbetts: 'This is a neat, well-crafted three-hander, making good use of its location; it really is a meaty role for Bell, who lets rip in what might be his most eye-catching part since Billy Elliot.'

London Film Award Nomination Niall MacCormick: '.. it has layers; the characters don't necessarily say the smartest or coolest things all the time, because they are flawed, indeed someone will often utter a line that seems stupid on the surface, but actually reveals valuable insight into the character. This is very clever writing and, what with it's wonderful performances, it really makes Albatross stand out.'

London Film Award Nomination Nick Murphy: 'Rarely does a horror film make the back of your neck tingle with the calibre of its performances as well as its jumps and jolts – but The Awakening, a beautifully mounted ghost story in the style of The Turn of the Screw, provides chills of both kinds.'

London Film Award Nomination Tom Kingsley and Will Sharpe: '[on Black Pond] .. funny, dreamily lyrical, armour-plated with eccentric self-confidence and also intensely English. It also, I have to say, has one of the most disturbing dream sequences I have seen for a while.'

London Film Award Nomination John Michael McDonagh: '[on The Guard] If signs point to a mismatched-buddy cop movie, well, that's sort of what you get, but nothing in this sly, wry little movie is quite what it appears. Even the racism turns out to be part of a larger take on Ireland's insularity, eroding identity and inexorable Americanisation – the latter of which adds a self-aware edge to the unlikely crime proceedings.'

London Film Award Nomination Simon Curtis: '[on My Week With Marilyn] His love for the story, and the fact that it is a story, not a biopic, has given him a casual confidence which lends itself well to the easy going nature of the movie. Although Curtis has directed this kind of thing before, it's always been for Television, so it's remarkable how comfortable and smooth his transition into feature films has been.'

London Film Award Nomination Ralph Fiennes: '[as director] .. makes a powerful case for Coriolanus as an essential, contemporary drama, about democracy, class war and the nation state. It reaches back to the Yugoslavian conflict, and the point is not just to satirise nationalist bullies and butchers, but also the smoothly indifferent mandarin class of western Europe in that era.'

London Film Award Nomination Carol Morley: '[on Dreams of a Life] .. a searing prose-poem on celluloid about loneliness... Watching it is an almost claustrophobic experience, but a very powerful and moving one.’

London Film Award Nomination Terence Davies: 'The scars of the heart have their outward reflection on these dark, broken streets, with little pockets of warmth and solace in the pubs where Londoners huddle... if the movie’s both gorgeous and stifling, that feels just right for Rattigan’s aching prison of a play.'

London Film Award nomination Joe Cornish: '[as director] Attack the Block is unashamedly modern, and the fine cast of youths clearly feel safe under Cornish's direction, together they deliver a cheery, wholesome, quintessentially British film.'
London Film Award nomination Kevin MacDonald: '[as director] Life in a Day is an intimate, startling, unsettling and often deeply moving odyssey through the everyday business of being human.'
London Film Award nomination Steve McQueen: “This is fluid, rigorous, serious cinema; the best kind of adult movie.”
London Film Award Nomination Lucy Walker: '.. one of Britain’s most daring and accomplished documentary makers.'
London Film Award Nomination Lynne Ramsay: '[on We Need to Talk about Kevin] Superb adaptation of Lionel Shriver’s novel.'
London Film Award Nomination Andrea Arnold: 'New, animalistic version of Wuthering Heights wows Venice Film Festival.'
