London Jazz Award nominees Trevor Watts and Veryan Weston: '[What drives you?] The music itself, the feeling of making and creating music together where nobody is prescribing anything, and the closeness of friendship that this music can give you as well.'

Jan 29
As a duo, you are often praised for how well you complement each other's music - what do you think is the underlying secret to that success?

All the things that friends have: affection, sharing, trust, sacrifice, and that amount of time together creates a certain kind of healthy familiarity that can also enable there to be possibilities to anticipate or even simultaneously read musical situations.

Having played all over the world, do you have a favourite spot and/or audience?

It's always great to feel there is a connection with an audience, so perhaps we are more likely to have that in more intimate playing environments. Trevor and I liked Brasilian audiences because they bring that open, attentive but also celebratory vibe to a gig.

What drives you?

The music itself, the feeling of making and creating music together where nobody is prescribing anything, and the closeness of friendship that this music can give you as well. For me it helps to create a feeling of social cohesion with a certain world which seems better than other more greedy and aggressive worlds.

Which musicians have influenced your style in particular?

So very many musics and individual musicians that I prefer not to separately mention any of them! Also I tend to change and move through different phases of listening to certain kinds of music.

Answered by Veryan and Trevor adds, "I was also going to answer them, but I felt the answers you gave were so close to what I would have said anyway and that's the truth.’
