London Theatre Award nomination Rachel De Lahay: '[on The Westbridge] .. a stellar display of thespian muscularity, the show is set to be an edgy success.'

Nov 09
It’s every young playwright’s dream – being a part of the young writer’s programme at the Royal Court, winning the Alfred Fagon Award with your first full-length play, and then seeing it produced at the Royal Court to stunning feedback from both press and public.

Well, someone’s got to do it – and Rachel de Lahay is the lady of this particular moment. The Westbridge at the Royal Court manages to juggle “youthful verve and adult observation”, as it leads the audience through inter-racial relationship problems and on to self-perpetuating gossip, culminating in the violent prejudices that inextricably accompany both. With aptly discomforting seating and stage design, and a stellar display of thespian muscularity, the show is set to be an edgy success.

And it doesn’t stop there - Rachel de Lahay has now also been selected as one of the BBC Writers Room 10 in association with the Bush Theatre, so you can expect a lot more from her in the future. In the meantime, The Westbridge runs in the Jerwood space at the Royal Court until November 19th, and then at the Royal Court Upstairs from November 25thThisisLondon review Photo Royal Court
