London TV Award nomination Shane Meadows: 'This Is England ’88 bears the essential stamp of good drama in that the characters seem so vivid, so true, that you feel that their lives go on after you’ve switched off the set.'

The Telegraph on This Is England ‘88:  “There seems to be a softening in Meadows’s vision. If the original film was straight out of the bare-knuckle school of drama of Alan Clarke’s Made In Britain, This Is England ’88 shades into Mike Leigh territory, with its comedy of social embarrassment. Invited back to the middle-class home of his drama-school friend, Shaun was patronised excruciatingly by her father offering his ‘Christmas comestibles tray’ ‘Are these, like, funny grapes?’ Shaun asked, reaching uncertainly for an olive... This Is England ’88 bears the essential stamp of good drama in that the characters seem so vivid, so true, that you feel that their lives go on after you’ve switched off the set.”

The ’88 instalment is the second spin-off from Meadows’ 2006 hit film This is England, which won him a BAFTA for Best British Film. The Award-winning Meadows hasn’t always stayed on the right side of the tracks, but his film-making certainly has. After a very small segue into petty crime, Meadows made about 30 short films in Nottingham, and then ventured into the world of features with Twenty-Four Seven, earning him several film festival awards. Other stunning accomplishments include Dead Man’s Shoes starring a pal of Meadows’, and fellow award-winning British gem, Paddy Considine. Shane is a self-taught director, and has recently led a very successful video master-class for budding film-makers with Channel 4.
