Matthew McConaughey: 'The male is always the pawn in a romantic comedy. Come together, break up, go chase her, get her, roll credits. That's what happens in all of them. Some of the scripts have the man coming back on all fours – but I'm like, 'What woman wants that guy?' The guy's gotta maintain his integrity, he's gotta maintain his balls. The guy's got to come back and go: 'I screwed up.' It's got to be a choice, not just desperation. The humour that I want to do is this: the guy's really self-assured and thinks he's got it all figured out, but then the door shuts, and the audience knows I don't have it figured out. You're getting a laugh because you get to watch me lying through my teeth and trying to be cool about the situation, but you know I'm going to eat crow in a minute.'
