How the Valentine weekend 48 Hour Short film competition is to be judged [no link]
Here's the e-mail sent to the three judges of the Valentine Weekend Film Competition:

"Here are the 10 shortlisted films. Thirteen teams picked up titles and genres, 10 submitted on time so they are all shortlisted.

Criteria: The content of the film should fit within the broad theme of 'love' and within the genre. Whether the title fits the content or not can be argued till the cows come home and so won't be considered.

You are deciding, based on your knowledge of film and experience in film-making, which films are better than others. The final points, across all three judges, should iron out any differences in approach and give a fair result.

List the films from 1 to 10  in order of merit, and give the best film 10 points, the second-best 9 points, and so on down to the last which gets 1 point.

All the films can be viewed on this page: http://www.londonfestivalfringe.com/general/48hour/48hrslist.php"
All 10 shortlisted films in the Valentine Weekend competition now on-site. They really are good. All done in 48 hours. Amazing! [no link]

Write a script, film it, and bring it back to the London Fringe - all in 48 hours!  Details

People are e-mailing in asking if they can team up with someone at the competition. Sorry, we can't connect you to people ourselves. Just turn up at the Roxy Bar and Screen on the evening of Friday 12 at 6 PM, tell people what you do and you may be able to join a team. Please note we are asking for a submission fee of £10 per team (on submission of film only) to buy a bottle of champagne for the winning team, chocolates for the runners-up, and to cover costs.
How the London Valentine Film competition is to be judged [no link]
The organisers will shortlist 10 films from the entries. All entries will be made available on YouTube so you get to see them all. It's really not that hard to pick the 10 best ones. The judges will be asked to list the 10 shortlisted films in order of merit, giving 10 points to the first, 9 points to the second, all the way down to 1 point to the last in their list. The points for each film will be added which will give an overall winner and runners-up.

Having three judges will iron out any large differences in backgrounds and temperament among them. Here are the scores for the top 5 films in the London Award for 48 Hour Short Film we ran in the London Bridge Festival in July last year:

People have been writing about love for centuries. They've made films about it the past 100 years or so. This isn't going to stop. Write a script on the theme of 'Love', film it, and bring it back to the London Fringe, all in 48 hours.

This competition is rather informal, but will still be a test of the creative and technical skills of everyone taking part. Each team of writers, director/s, film crew, actors, will be given a title and a genre to work from. link

Working on Feature Film Competition for the London Fringe [no link]
There are over 100 feature films produced in the UK each year. Most of them do not get released in cinemas , or even a distribution deal. There are good feature films in them that don't get to a screen, any screen, small or large.

The idea is to hold a Feature Film Competition to give the best of these a chance to get a deal. We can arrange a screening for the top 3 at, say the BFI.There's likely to be many submissions.

Question: How do we whittle them down to just three? Will need a judging panel and a simple process. Suggestions?

Titles and genres were given out at random to the teams. Some combinations were, perhaps, more difficult than others. Hard to say which ones as it's mostly subjective.

We felt that the judges would use their experience in making films to decide the best movies. Having three judges would iron out any large differences in backgrounds and temperament.

None of the organisers were involved in the judging. And we did not know the judges beforehand.

Hope this goes some way to explaining the result.

End of the Line - July, 22nd

Scientists predict that if we continue fishing as we are now, we will see the end of most seafood by 2048. The End of the Line chronicles the events that have helped to bring about this situation and how actions by industry and consumers are contributing to this rather dire state of affairs. However the film does not seek to strike fear into its viewers, instead it points to solutions that are simple and doable and which will ensure that we get to enjoy our favourite seafood for years to come.

Age of Stupid - July, 20

Pete Postlethwaite stars as a man living alone in the devastated world of 2055, looking back at 'archive' footage from 2007 and asking: why didn't we stop climate change when we had the chance? The film weaves together 6 human stories of individuals wishing to make a difference and the difficulties they face, contrasting their stories against those who are part of the problem. The film highlights that we are at a critical point in our history, but that time has not yet run out for us to change the future.

11th Hour - July, 21st

This Al Gore-style environmental warning film is narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio. It is a captivating documentary which explores the perilous state of our planet, and the means by which we can change its course. Contributing to this crucial film are noted politicians, scientists and other ambassadors for the importance of a universal ecological consciousness. more
